MRH EP14: Tyramine and Migraine: What You Really Need to Know
If you’ve ever googled “migraine food triggers,” tyramine probably made the list. It’s often labeled a classic trigger and recommended to be removed from your diet if you have migraine, but there’s WAY more nuance here that you need to know!
Mainly: tyramine isn't a problem for most people with migraine unless it’s consumed it HUGE amounts. Amounts you would never get from a normal meal.
In the latest episode of Migraine Relief Hotline, I break down the science behind tyramine, why it’s been so misunderstood, and what to consider before cutting foods out of your life. Spoiler alert: it’s rarely the villain it’s made out to be!
We’ll also discuss what to do it you do feel that tyramine is a trigger for you, because there are almost always deeper factors at play!
Impaired enzyme function, gut imbalances, and even nutrient deficiencies can impact how your body can tolerate tyramine, and addressing these issues can help you loosen up the restrictions on your diet.
We’ll also zoom out to talk about food triggers in general - migraine is complex, and while food can play a role, it’s never the whole story. Gut health, hormones, blood sugar, and nervous system regulation are often much more impactful than cutting out a ton of foods!
What you'll learn in this episode:
Why tyramine got its bad reputation (and whether it deserves it)
How to tell if it might be relevant for you
What to focus on instead of long-term food restriction
